White Christmas

DB and I had a wonderful Christmas, we spent a quiet day watching movies and the snow fall.  Yes, we had a white Christmas in Georgia this year.

We got about an inch of snow, the kids in the neighborhood had a great time building snowmen and sliding down the hills.  I am not sure the pups enjoyed the snow all that much, each time they went out, they came back in quickly and snuggled back into the blankets.

The snow is still on the grass, plants and deck today and as it is not getting above freezing for the next couple of days.  I am hoping that DB and I can get up to the National Cemetery and get some pictures of the snow on the wreaths.

Christmas came a couple of days early this year, DB's wonderful parents gifted their 55 gallon saltwater fish tank to us.  Moving the tank took all day on the 23rd and after an extra trip to the exotic fish store for additional water, it is up and running.

In order to get the water from the bucket to the tank, DB had to suck on the tube, every now and again, he ended up with a mouth full of saltwater.
The tank also came with one clown fish... Nemo.  However, we learned that a single clown fish will become female, so Nemo is now Nemette.
We are very excited to begin getting additional fish and a sea anemone for Nemette.

3 Days til Christmas

Three days until Christmas, hard to believe.  I finally finished my shopping with the exception of our annual tree ornament.  The pups got their annual Christmas haircut yesterday, they are looking quite festive in their snowman bandanna's.  It has been raining here for the past couple of days so we did not get to see the moon eclipse.  We tried but it was too cloudy.

We tried a new recipe yesterday, homemade Butter Toffee with Chocolate & Sea Salt.  Not too bad, the first batch of chocolate was unsweetened and really tasted well gross!  Doodle made quite the face when he tried it.  I do not think we spread the toffee thin enough, but overall easy to make and tasty.  The recipe came from The Pioneer Woman. Try it you won't be disappointed.

For someone that loves to take pictures, I have been sorely lacking lately but at least I am caught up on my sleep.  Doodle is not yet and I am trying to be quiet and not wake him... again!

Three days people... get out there and SHOP.

Iconic Images from 2010

Yahoo has put out what they feel at the iconic images from the past year.  Here is the link to all the photos...  Iconic Images

Here are a couple that I really enjoyed and reminded me of all that happened this year.

We finally got around to almost being completely finished with the Christmas decorations.  This year we have tried several new ideas, some we will keep for next year, some we will not... We tried the new LED lights on the tree, they give it a blueish tint... not keeping for next year.

Outside we decided to wrap presents and add real garland around the front door... we will keep this idea.

Greatest Invention Ever

The washer and dryer were successfully installed and let me just say THEY ARE GREAT!

I absolutely love them and the clothes are so much cleaner, they smell nicer, the dryer takes all of 30 minutes to dry, compared to the 2 hours for our previous beast.

Of course, it would be our luck that the bottom oven of our double oven now will not turn off.  We are having to flip the breaker each and every time we want to bake.  Looks like the next purchase will have to be a new oven.  Guess I get to go shopping again!

Oh, I am not suppose to act excited... SSSShhhh do not tell Doodle!

It's official, one semester completed, I am now waiting on grades.

In the past 16 weeks
11 books have been read = 5000 pages read
3 research papers written = 45 pages of writing
Weekly questions answered = more words than I can count
Lack of normal sleep = thousands of gray hairs
Extra reading = at least one dead tree
Here are the binders of work from the semester.

Here are books, tabbed to make it easier to find stuff.  Only one problem with that theory, the tabbing got out of hand!

Looking forward to starting it all again in January. Books are already starting to arrive, with titillating titles such as "Globalization and its Discontents"!

Rabbit, Rabbit, Rabbit

Happy December!

A common British superstition is saying Rabbit, Rabbit, Rabbit before anything else in the morning on the first of each month.  Doing so, will result in good luck for the month.  I always say it but never really knew why... now we all know why!

If you need a reminder - there are now 24 days until Santa arrives.

The Washer & Dryer that was not!

Last week, one of the pre-Black Friday ads had the LG Steam Washer and Dryer at too good of a price to pass up.  As this had been one of the items that we had been looking at getting on Black Friday, we decided to just order them early.  Confirmation call the day before Thanksgiving, allowed us plenty of time to move the old washer and dryer out of the laundry room.  The frugality in DB & I came out when we decided to build our own platform... why spend an extra $500 when we can do it ourselves?

As our new nifty graphite colored do it all washer and dryer was to be delivered between 8:30 am and 12:30 pm on Black Friday, we ensured that we were back from our shopping experience in time for the delivery.  8:00 am the telephone rings... here comes the washer and dryer!

WAIT... what was that, there is no washer and dryer?  It did not ship from LG?  Oh the humanity...
Currently we have a beautiful platform just waiting for the new washer and dryer, along with an ever growing pile of laundry.

Shop Vac

Doodle and I awoke at 4:00 am for Black Friday to ensure we were at Home Depot for the shop vac that was on sale for $29.00.  This was Doodle's first shopping experience on Black Friday, as we drove by the Target, Kohls, and Best Buy with full parking lots, we knew the insanity had begun.  I tried explaining the divide and conquer strategy but lack of coffee and sleep still filling our eyes, he just said, "I do not think it will be that crowded".

As the two trucks in front of us, turned into the Home Depot parking lot, I cried "hurry, we must beat them, they cannot get the shop vac"!  I emerged from the truck at a full sprint, looking back, Doodle had not even emerged yet.  Entering Home Depot, I screamed "I need a shop vac" and there coming down the aisle was our neighbor with the shop vacs in question.
(Turns out we are not the only crazy people to get up at 4:00 am for a shop vac)  Luckily Home Depot had plenty of the shop vacs still left and we scooped one up.  SUCCESS!

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  I hope that everyone had a wonderful day with friends and family.  Doodle and I enjoyed our day free of cooking by heading over to a friends house for fried turkey and ham.  YUM!

I'll be posting pictures from our adventure this morning and shopping on Black Friday a bit later.  Just too tired from getting up this morning at 4:00 am.

Small Harmless Looking Lizard

Did you know lizards bite? And have teeth?  How do I know this, you ask yourself... yesterday I was bit by a lizard!  Why you ask was I holding a lizard?  Let me set the stage: we had gone to check on a house, there was a small, harmless, looking lizard in the basement.  (Not so harmless after all)
Since lizards are one of God's creatures and I believe all creatures great and small should have a fighting chance to live, the lizard must be moved outside to bask in the warmth of the sun.  Have you ever tried to herd a lizard?  Herding a lizard is about as easy as herding cats!  He zigged and I zagged, he ran over my shoe and I managed not to scream in terror.
About this time, DB walks in and asks why I just do not pick him up by the tail?  Come on people, we all know that their tails fall off and that is the last thing I wanted to be holding.  Instead, I had the grand idea to just scoop him up.  After all, he is a small, harmless looking lizard!  The lizard stops, I reach down, scoop him up, thinking this will be quick and easy, out the door with him and he bites me!  He bit down on my palm, I scream and fling the small, harmless looking lizard 10 feet across the room.   The lizard hits the wall across the room and is obviously dazed and confused.
I exclaim, I WAS BIT BY A LIZARD, at which time DB says, I did not know they bite.  Brilliant aren't we!
Examining my hand, there is a spot where the skin had been scraped, probably from me flinging the small, harmless looking lizard across the room.  At this time, I determine is much more prudent to herd the lizard toward the door.  After 5 minutes both the lizard and I are outside, exhausted, and mentally drained.  Before we left I checked to ensure the small, harmless looking lizard was still alive and thankfully he was.
If there is a moral to this story, I have no idea what it is, except that small, harmless looking lizards can be quite menacing.

Operation Cats

The ASPCA is raising money through Operations Cats.  This fantastic project is aimed at helping the ASPCA continue to fund their animal welfare services in 2011, and now you can help them too!

You can take a look at my profile page here:

Help my virtual cat ButtSpot get to the top of the leaderboard by donating or buying a gift.  Any contribution that you can make is incredibly valuable, helping the ASPCA guide cats into a better life.

The cause
Every year, millions of cats and dogs of all ages and breeds are euthanized or suffer as strays. These numbers are the result of unplanned litters that could be prevented by spaying or neutering.

Deal of the Week

Up until today, I have been studying at a 4 x 4 card table and small wooden chair.  Currently, I am sitting in a real office chair working at a real desk... We got the desk with hutch (not pictured) and a chair all for the low price of $60.00.

That's right, only $60.00.  YIPPEE!!!!!

School is winding down, only 4 weeks to go, my last final will be the first week in December.  The days are getting colder and shorter, it is dark by 6:00 p.m.  The holidays will be upon us before we realize it.  This year Doodle and I are staying home, for both Thanksgiving and Christmas.  We are just too tired to venture out this year, school has been hard on us both, we have gone from doing everything together, do only having a few hours a week together.  I know it will be worth it when I graduate, but school has taken a toll.  We are looking forward to just being together all day doing nothing or doing something.

Thank you to everyone that has been there and supported both Doodle and I this semester, we truly appreciate it.

Veterans Day

The Veterans Day National Ceremony is held each year on November 11th at Arlington National Cemetery . The ceremony commences precisely at 11:00 a.m. with a wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknowns and continues inside the Memorial Amphitheater with a parade of colors by veterans’ organizations and remarks from dignitaries. The ceremony is intended to honor and thank all who served in the United States Armed Forces.
Take a moment today, to stop and say thank you to all who have served and who are serving.

Aging Gratefully

This morning on the way to work, NPR interviewed Nora Ephron, she has a new book out "I Remember Nothing: And Other Reflections".  What she said at the end of the interview really struck me this morning.  It doesn't matter how old you are, these are words to inspire us all to live life to the fullest.

"Despite all the I'm-getting-old jokes in Ephron's new book, the last chapter, called "The O Word," takes on a more elegiac and wistful tone as Ephron considers the serious implications of aging.
"You do get to a certain point in life where you have to realistically, I think, understand that the days are getting shorter, and you can't put things off thinking you'll get to them someday," she says. "If you really want to do them, you better do them. There are simply too many people getting sick, and sooner or later you will. So I'm very much a believer in knowing what it is that you love doing so you can do a great deal of it."
For Ephron, there was a moment that helped bring that realization vividly home. She was with friends, playing a round of "What would your last meal be?"
(Her pick, by the way: a Nate & Al's hot dog.)
"But [my friend] Judy was dying of throat cancer, and she said, 'I can't even have my last meal.' And that's what you have to know is, if you're serious about it, have it now," Ephron says. "Have it tonight, have it all the time, so that when you're lying on your deathbed you're not thinking, 'Oh I should have had more Nate & Al's hot dogs.'"

Here's a link to the entire interview:

Daylight Savings Time

Did you remember to set your clocks back last night or this morning as in our case?  Why are you asking do we still observe Daylight Savings Time?  I have no idea.  I believe our government should put daylight savings to a vote... I bet it would fail!

Get out there and vote.  It matters not whom you vote for, only that you vote.

When I get tired of studying, I look through the pictures we have taken in the past to organize them.  I came across these today:

This was at the barn, Doodle must have tired of watching me ride. :)

Wednesday, October 27, 2010

I realize I do not have children... but Halloween is on October 31st, a Sunday this year.  Our subdivision had all the houses vote if we wanted the children to trick-or-treat on Saturday or Sunday; the reasoning... Halloween is on a school night.  Thankfully, our subdivision is smart enough to vote for Sunday.

I am sorry, but I have issues with this and apparently several towns in our area have just decided to move Halloween to Saturday.  What happens when Halloween falls on a Wednesday, are they just going to move it again. I will get off the soapbox now, it just irks me!

Dog Costumes

This year, I wanted the dogs to have costumes for Halloween... why, you ask. I have no idea, I just think they are cute when dressed up. Being the budget conscience shopper that I am, I waited until all the costumes were on sale, not a good plan.

The first set of costumes were too small, the next set were too big. However, I did snap a few pictures before I gave up and took them back to the store. ENJOY....

Shen is a football in honor of Doodle's fantasy football team.
Shen was really not feeling the football idea.
Ling is the cheerleader.
Doesn't Ling just look thrilled at this idea of mine!

Doodle Do

Doodle has two lists he refers to:

Hunny-do list
Doodle-do list

I am sure you can tell what the first list consists of, stuff that I would like completed aro
und the house. The Doodle-do list is things that Doodle wants to work on. Lately Doodle completed a project that I just have to share, I was so very impressed and it has allowed for more organization.

Car Care, Plant Care, Holiday Decorations, they all have a home.

We were trying for color coordinating bins, that just got to be too much!

Suddenly Saturday

I know I promised a great picture yesterday but I did not even turn on the computer last night. Today I have been working on another research paper... trade between China and the U.S. I must say this is not a terribly interesting topic for me, I have struggled today.

In light of the struggle, I thought I would share pictures of Mo, we dressed her for Hallowe
en a couple of years ago, it was comical to say the least. Enjoy! The funniest part of this day was Mo running down the street with Doodle and I giving chase.

Finally Friday

This has been one of the longest weeks of my life! School has me down, I am tired, tired of reading, tired of writing, tired of researching, just plan tired. Additionally, it has been warm, too warm for the middle of October and that has me down as well. Doodle will say rainbow is down. It is from the Jimmy Dean sausage commercial where the sun has to feed the rainbow so she will make colors again. Please tell me you know what I am talking about! Anyway, rainbow is down.

I cannot even find a fun sunny picture to share, well part of that is the fact I am at work and should be working. I will find something tonight and add.

Sunday, October 10, 2010

Since I have been dreaming about Cuba (paper topic) and the fact that I wrote my paper in Dutch (which I cannot read nor write), I thought watching the sunrise and getting a great picture would help clear the mind of Dutch.

Our house sits up on a slight hill and we actually have rather nice sunrises and sunsets, especially when there are clouds or fog, which of course is not today. So instead of a blinding picture of the sun... enjoy the one from the beach, where I wish I was!

One of the things I love about the fall besides the cooler weather is that I can watch the sun rise, at least on the weekends while I am home. There is something about the day just starting, what happened yesterday is past and before you is another chance to make a difference. Or in my case, another fun filled day of reading.

Straw bale and Pumpkins

We finally got around to starting the fall decorating this weekend and what a perfect weekend it was for it. The highs were in the low 70's with a nice crisp breeze. We are planning on adding a few more pumpkins and some corn stalks.
We also put a few decorations on the dining room table.

Fall has arrived

The mornings have been crisp, the afternoons manageable and all is right with the world again. We are putting out our fall decorations this weekend and for the first time trying an apple cobbler. I have decided to make Michelle Obama's Apple Cobbler. I only hope mine turns out looking and tasting as good!

Chip Feet

Ling's feet smell like Doritos. Not all the time but most of the time. I enjoy smelling them, it is a comforting smell, does that make me weird?

Sunday, September 26, 2010

We woke to the sounds of rain! Okay, we actually woke to the sounds of Ling barking, alerting us that rain was here at 3:00 am. But alias, it is raining and that is a very good thing. The rain has been steady for most of the morning, according to the rain gauge we have gotten a couple of inches. I opened the windows so I can listen to the rain and am about to head out for ice cream. When we were kids, whenever it rained we would load up, head to the beach and eat ice cream.

Mom brought us a couple of rain chains. Doodle has only put one up so far, we are not sure where to put the other.

The rain produced a beautiful double rainbow, of course, I can not figure out how to fit the entire rainbow in one picture, so here are both ends.
