Chip Feet

Ling's feet smell like Doritos. Not all the time but most of the time. I enjoy smelling them, it is a comforting smell, does that make me weird?

We woke to the sounds of rain! Okay, we actually woke to the sounds of Ling barking, alerting us that rain was here at 3:00 am. But alias, it is raining and that is a very good thing. The rain has been steady for most of the morning, according to the rain gauge we have gotten a couple of inches. I opened the windows so I can listen to the rain and am about to head out for ice cream. When we were kids, whenever it rained we would load up, head to the beach and eat ice cream.

Mom brought us a couple of rain chains. Doodle has only put one up so far, we are not sure where to put the other.

The rain produced a beautiful double rainbow, of course, I can not figure out how to fit the entire rainbow in one picture, so here are both ends.

Happy Fall

Wow, according to the calendar it is fall. I am not sure anyone told mother nature that cooler weather has been ordered. It has been in the 90's here during the day. We need rain desperately and perhaps if the weatherman is correct that will be coming this weekend.

While the days have been getting shorter, the leaves have not started turning just yet, so I had to dig out a couple of photos to remind me why I live in this hot, humid forsaken place.

Yes, DB is the reason I live in this place... I just love this picture and I just love him.

E-mail from DB

Okay, so I am sitting here this morning…working and I keep smelling something, not something bad. Something that smells clean and refreshing, actually something pretty good. I keep wondering what the hell it is, I am looking around then I don’t smell it anymore…keep working…then another whiff, what the hell? I remember that I took the trash out this morning and there was something from the rental that spilled in a bag that I had put in the trash…that’s it, I must have gotten that on my shoes or pant leg this morning…cool mystery solved! But a few minutes later I got a big whiff! My God I am dying…I am smelling things that are not actually there. My stress level and heart rate increase I start to go to the internet to webMD to find out what is wrong with me and how much time I have left, then I remember!!!! I put on new deodorant this morning!!!! Good Lord, what is wrong with me?!?!?!!?

I just love him!

Monarch Butterflies

What a glorious morning it was, our little butterfly hatched this morning and we actually had two! After researching on the internet, I knew the waiting was almost up: 10-14 days is the time it takes for a Monarch to go from the pupa stage to the butterfly stage. After staring at our tree for most of the morning, I counted 4 pupa skins, looks like the tree is good for something after all.

If you look closely you can see the wings have turned orange and black inside the pupa.

The newly emerged Monarch's wings are soft and flexible. See how wrinkled the new wings are.
After emerging from the pupa it takes over an hour for the Monarchs wings to be strong enough for flight. Here it is waiting

Resting after the first flight

Cycle of the Monarch Part II

One week down in our quest to hatch a Monarch Butterfly. This is what the pupae looks like. I check on the little guy each night to see if there are any changes, so far none. Hopefully I will be able to document any changes and then catch sight of the butterfly when it emerges.

Study Kitty

The cats have started hanging out in the office while I study. Today, Mo really got into the reading, okay, she really got into the playing with the yellow highlighter. If you look closely she has yellow on her paws.

30 Days

It has almost been one month since I started graduate school. In these short 4 weeks lots has happened:
  • I turned 40
  • I have a great group of friends
  • Mom came for a visit - thank goodness, I have missed her!
  • I have had minor breakdowns weekly
  • I have many, many more gray hairs than before - sorry folks no pictures of that one!
  • Doodle has accepted the role of major care-giver of the furry ones
  • The furry ones are now allowed in rooms they were not before *This is Doodle talking... I do not agree with this, this is wrong, they should not be allowed in these rooms!*
  • I have my own personal Back To School Fairy
  • I feel like I have been in school for years
  • I realize I love my husband even more than I thought possible

Cycle of the Monarch Part 1

Earlier this summer we had green, lush, beautiful butterfly bushes. This is what I found a couple of weeks ago.

The bushes were covered in these yellow and black caterpillars, a good 15 or 20 of them were eating the leaves of the butterfly bush. I figured with my luck these caterpillars would turn into some sort of ugly moth. Luckily, I was mistaken, thanks to the nifty internet and a friends caterpillar book, we determined that our caterpillars are Monarch Butterflies.

In my spare time, I have been watching these caterpillars eat the entire bush and then disappear. Today, my crazy barn friend and I found one, hanging head down about to become a pupa. Hopefully, nothing will happen to the little dude and I will be able to document the birth of a Monarch Butterfly in a couple of weeks.

Who turned 40!

Hi, I have been so extremely busy with school that DB and mom thought I needed a bit of me time. Or at least that was their premise for the surprise 40th birthday they threw together... I think perhaps DB needed some time away from the books and stress that school has created in our household.

Saturday night, I, GB turned 40!

I came home from the barn and the house was decorated and people were due to arrive. It was a small affair, just a handful of great girlfriends for a night of laughter and fun. DB commented today that the group of us cackled like a bunch of hens and you know, WE DID.

Of course, the honorary Winnie-the-Pooh cake. Who said I was too old for Pooh?

If more pictures surface, I will share. Thank you everyone that attended the surprise party, it was such a special night for me.
