Corny to the Max

I love these pictures!  A girl from the barn snapped these pictures of Doodle and I last week at the horse show.  The pictures capture how much fun we have together.

Show Bug

Last weekend I rode in my second horse show and I have officially caught the show bug.  I am planning on riding next weekend in another show and am looking into entering the high points contest for our area.  The show last weekend was a local show, the competition was nothing like ProAm, but it was good experience and that is what I am looking for.  I still made mistakes, but not as many, and was not so nervous that I thought I would puke!

Riding in Academy there are only two or three classes that I can show in.  Last weekend, I rode in two classes and took first in both.  The first class was walk, trot adult... only two people showing.  The second class was showmanship equitation... 7 people showing.

Do I look of nervous? Don't answer that!
Cha Cha was spot on... she looks awesome!
Another rider from the barn... do you recognize Big A?
Doodle was a trooper, taking pictures and hanging out for the afternoon.  I am continually amazed by his support and love.

Love This

My wreath on the front door was finally retired after baking in the sun for the last couple of years.  The flowers had turned strange colors and it was not pleasant to look at any longer.  When contemplating what to replace the wreath with I came across a magazine that had a great idea, matching hanging baskets on the door.

I found the baskets at Tuesday Morning for a steal, bought some flowers and DB put them up.  I just love the way it turned out and I can use winter flowers or greenery for the holidays.

Bolting

We let the lettuce go too long... it Bolted!  (Why is that the technical term?)  We tried it last night and it was tough, bitter and nasty!  This definitely explains why my friend who wanted to try the lettuce never asked for seconds.  We yanked the rest of it from the garden and threw it to the critters.

The garden is not doing as well this year or maybe I am just getting anxious.  I forget we are still in May, the weather has been summer like for the past month!  A couple of the tomato plants are being nibbled on by something.  The herbs are not coming up as they should, the radishes grew strange appendages and I was afraid to eat them.  Next year I will have to reevaluate where to place the plants, it seems our new area gets more shade than I thought.  I am not sure the pumpkins will produce because of this so I may move one of the vines into the sun.

Of the three different flower we planted only the Dahlias are coming up.  I will say the flowers are pretty but not the different colors as the bag indicated, so far everything looks yellow.  None of Peonies came up and that is what I really wanted.  The other flower, I have no clue what is called did not come up either.  Perhaps we planted incorrectly but how hard is it to put a bulb in the ground?

Yes, that is a concrete block by the door, why it is there I haven't a clue!

The Next Hall of Fame Player

Had to share a couple photos of Doodlebug at the Baseball Hall of Fame... I think he was having fun!

Baseball Hall of Fame

I'm back!  I have neglected blogging lately for several reasons, none of them good.  I was really out of things to say, I was and still am tired.  Tired of the drama at work.  Tired of the drama at the barn.  Tired of being an adult.  There are days that I wish I could be a kid again... get up, have someone fix your breakfast, go outside, play until your mom called for dinner.

How does Cooperstown factor into being tired, you ask.  That is where I surprised DB with a weekend birthday trip for his 40th birthday.  If you recall, Doodle turned forty back in April and I had been planning the surprise trip for a couple of months.  What a grand weekend we had, minus the small issue of no hotel rooms to be found the last night.  If you are a baseball fan, know of someone who is a baseball fan, plan a trip to the Hall of Fame.  Even if you are not a baseball fan, the Hall of Fame has something for everyone!

I went ahead and added the VIP experience for DB for his weekend.  This allowed us access to the museum after hours and two behind the scenes tours.  It was thrilling being in the museum with only 20 other people, having the entire place to yourself to stand in front of the exhibits and talk without feeling like you are blocking the view of others.  The exhibits are beautiful, well done, informative.  The pictures do not do the place justice.  There is so much to see, I know I did not read everything, I would still be there!

What I loved most, was the old uniforms that look pristine.  The records that will never be touched because today's baseball players do not pitch full games or know what it is not to have a day off.  Did you know that the first baseball uniforms had collars, because it was considered a gentleman's game?  Did you know that the first night games were played by the Negro Leagues?  I can honestly say, while I still find baseball boring, the history of the game reflects what our country was experiencing and I have a new respect for today's players but especially for those that paved the way forward.

Novice vs Expert

Do you remember we have a salt water aquarium?  I have not blogged about it because it had become the bane of my existence.  Cleaning is required every other weekend and given the stuff that I have been growing, cleaning entailed breaking the tank down, cleaning everything, and putting it back together.  Additionally, I am not crafty, I do not have a designing bone in my body, hence has indicated by the picture below...

Enter the expert!  We met our new neighbor about a month ago and would you believe he owns a local reef store!  He graciously offered to look at our tank and said "wow, that is sad".  Tell me something I do not know!  Anyway, he offered to help us design an actual reef tank and spent Sunday morning at our house with extra live rock.  In a manner of minutes he had created this...

It is amazing, wonderful, I am out of words to describe how the tank looks.  Doodle and I just stood there in awe!  Look at all the places for fish to swim and hide, there are places for coral to grow.  I am excited about the tank again. We have coral fragments for the tank, that should grow and will be able to add new fish in a couple of weeks.

I can whole heartily recommend Pure Reef if you are in the Atlanta area or just visiting.

PS. I was not paid for this blog, it is strictly my opinion.

Battle of Puebla - Cinco de Mayo

I think it is great that we live in a country where we celebrate holidays with great gusto that are not ours.  It does disturb me that the majority of Americans probably do not know why Cinco de Mayo is important in Mexican heritage.

Do you?

Allow a very short Mexican history lesson: after the Mexican-American war, France occupied Mexico.  The president of Mexico at the time decided that the country could not afford to repay its debts and asked that the country as a whole be allowed two years not to make payments.  The president also promised that the debts would be repaid.  This request was unacceptable. So, in 1862, France began to march.  Remember France had fought on the side of America and wanted America to become a larger power than it was in 1862.

Cinco de Mayo marks the victory of the Mexican Army over the French at the Battle of Puebla.  It was really a symbolic victory bringing unity to Mexico as within three years, the French defeated the Mexican Army and placed a ruler of their choosing in power.

There you have it, a short history lesson.

Bucket List

Do you have a bucket list?  I do... I assumed everyone does.  However, I learned Friday morning after ten years of marriage to the man I love, he does not have a bucket list.  How can this be?  I began peppering him with questions:

GB: Where have you always wanted to visit?
DB: No where

GB: Skydiving?
DB: Hell no

GB: Hot air ballon?
DB: Hell no

GB: I am going to create a bucket list for you!
DB: Good God!

Ideas!  I need ideas...

We Have Stairs

I am so excited, the stairs are up and look so good!  They are not completely finished and we had to extend the patio and make a few minor changes in the plan to get them in but for the first time in three years,we can walk from the deck to the yard.  I just had to share...

 Looking down from the deck

On the patio looking into the yard

In the yard looking at new deck and patio
It is really coming together!
